As I stepped into Casa Gregotti, I was immediately enveloped by a sense of history and innovation. This isn't just a residence; it's a living testament to the fusion of art, design, and culinary excellence. Located in Milan's Via Bonaventura Cavalieri, the space was originally the home of Quinto Gregotti, a pioneering textile manufacturer and avant-garde art collector. In the 1960s, his grandson, renowned architect Vittorio Gregotti, designed the interiors, creating a harmonious blend of function and aesthetics.
Today, Maria Gregotti, Quinto's great-granddaughter, has breathed new life into this legacy. With a background in curating international art projects and a passion for creating spaces that foster dialogue, Maria has transformed the apartment into a private home-gallery. This multidisciplinary salon hosts exhibitions, culinary experiences, and conversations that bridge generations and disciplines.
Walking through Casa Gregotti, I was struck by the meticulous attention to detail. Each room is named after a family member, and the interiors are a curated mix of historical design pieces and contemporary artworks. For instance, the custom-designed library by Vittorio Gregotti is complemented by a Nereid Ivory rug from Sahrai Milano, while Gio Ponti's Lampada 0024 illuminates sculptural Ear Chairs by Voukenas and Petrides.
The heart of the home is the kitchen, equipped with Knoll furnishings and a central travertine marble island. Here, the "Cooking with Art" project unfolds, where chefs collaborate with artists to create multisensory dining experiences that blur the lines between culinary and visual arts.
Quinto Gregotti's legacy as a forward-thinking collector is evident throughout the space. His collaborations with artists like Fernand Léger, Bruno Munari, and Atanasio Soldati are showcased alongside works by contemporary artists such as Ai Weiwei and Nathalie Djurberg. This intergenerational dialogue reflects Maria's commitment to preserving and expanding her family's artistic heritage.
Casa Gregotti is more than a gallery; it's a cultural hub that fosters connections among artists, collectors, and the community. With plans for future exhibitions and events, it continues to evolve as a space where art, design, and conversation converge.
Visiting Casa Gregotti was an enriching experience that highlighted the power of spaces to inspire and connect. In a city like Milan, known for its rich cultural tapestry, Casa Gregotti stands out as a beacon of creativity and legacy. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend experiencing this unique space firsthand.
